Where I stayed
After 30 minutes on the longtail, admiring the many white beaches on the way we arrive at the hotel, via the beach! It looks really great, beautiful water, like on postcards, trees half hanging in the water with hammocks....I think we will have fun here!! The bungalow is right on the beach (and after a few days the beach is in the bungalow...i,possible to keep sand out!!!!!) and we all hurry to get our bathing suits on and our snorkelling gears.....waowwwwwwwwwwwwwww......we can hear the girls screaming in ecstasy through their tubas at each fish they see. You just walk into the water waist deep, look down under and it is alrady full of life! A little further over the coral it gets even more exciting. OK, we are going to book a full day with a boat to see the different snorkelling sites and beatiful beaches...we'll let Michael organize that, that should keep him busy for a while!! After the beach, time for a nice cleansing shower to get the sand a salf off.......hmmmm, how nice...until you open your mouth and realioye that you are showering with salty water.....yuk! The soap doesn't foam....hopefully we will not have to be salt sticky for 8 days.....but in the end it is not too bad once you are dry!!!
After dinner we get back to room via the beach...full of crabs! We had seen little ones in the afternoon but those are huge, scuttling around like crazy in every direction.....we just have to catch some....and it becomes our nightly ritual...find the biggest crab of the day!
Next day we decide to walk to Tonsai, the litle village. It is a 30 minutes steep walk to the top, which has a nice viewpoint, and then another 30 minutes down. At the top we are rewarded with a magnificient view of both bays and ....an ice cream, yeahhhhhhhh! There's a picture up there from the two bays right after the tsunami and it sends chills down my spine...it must have been horrible! Two waves of 5 and 3 meters arrived from opposite sides and hit the village at once...They have now installed a huge siren in case of emergency and tsunami evacuation routes.....Down in the village we quickly realize that it is the Thai New Year's Eve....everydody is splashing water all over the place (reminding the holy water poured over the Buddah during the ceremony) and within two minutes we are soaking wet, which is actually pretty nice because we were just so hot from our walk! The whole village is one big party, with loud music all around and some people (tourists) already on the drunken side....not really our scene... we leave the center of the place and get to where the festival is quieter..the girls hace fun splashing everybody with water bottles
Back at the hotel we hear about the trouble in Bangkok and after getting messages from home decide to cancel our two days in Bangkok before flying to Dubai. We decide to spend those 2 days in Phuket, our main worry being not to be able to drive to the airport in Bangkok, depending how the situation evolves. We find a really great 4 stars hotel on Kata beach for half the normal price(1st week of the low season) and book a deluxe room for the girls and.....a jacuzzi villa for ourselves!!! Decide to leave Phi Phi 2 days earlier to have 4 days in Phuket. Ok, all arranged!
Next on the programm is our snorkelling trip...each spot is more beautifull, colourful fishes all over, they come and eat bread and bananas out of your hand (see little video. It is so funny, it tickles all around you, I can't help laughing all the time. We are a bit disappointed not to see any turtles but for that you need to go diving. Margaux is really keen on going but is all disappointed because the minimum age is 10...next time maybe! We stop on several beatiful beaches, including the famous Maya Bay, where the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo di Caprio (Leeeeoooooooooooooo!) was filmed....well, it is a beautiful beach if you pluck of the like 3'000 tourists walking around on it!!!!!! What a joke...worse that Disney World!! Anyway, at least we can say we went there (are you guys all very impressed???)
