We woke up to a beautiful day.    In fact, it was quite hot, so that was a wonderful change from New York, that was chilly.

We bought tickets for a tour where you can hop on and off, and had three different loops of Washington.   We got off at Lincoln's Memorial and joined the next loop which took us to Arlington Cemetery.  Unfortunately we couldn't see much, but decided that time was at the essence, so just stayed on the bus and looped back to Lincoln, which is what I really wanted to see.  We had the required photos and then ambled down the reflecting pools to the Washington Memorial which is the needle thing!

With it being memorial weekend, there are thousands upon thousands of motor bikes here, all vets who are called the Rolling Thunder.   They have the most enormous Harley Davidsons that you have ever seen, and they will roll through the streets of Washington tomorrow in a parade.     All around the town today it sounds like thunder as these bikes roar along.   The parade must be an awesome sight tomorrow, and we are going to try and change our flight, but I don't have much hope in that.    There was one bike across from the hotel, that as he started his engine he set off a few car alarms ... it was that loud!!!

Ash has been a bit grumps today as she is tired, and her ankle is hurting, so we have come back to the hotel and will have an early night.   We feel memorialed out ... so don't feel cheated on seeing anything.

We have spent all day walking around looking at the sights, or else on the bus have guided tours, so it has been excellent.

Gosh Val, you and Ash certainly are seeing every single thing in the US - I am sitting here in Maun looking at your pics and reading your stories and have to admit, feeling green with envy!!! When are you heading for Africa? Give me a call sometime - my phone no is +267 686 3819 or cell: +267 71731176 - it would be great to have a chat. It would have been so nice to see you - guess we'll just have to get to Oz sometime. Hope you continue having a wonderful time and that Ash's ankle improves soon. Love, Gail xxx

Thanks for the thoughtful article and excellent pictures. So often the importance of this day is forgotten and freedom so readily taken for granted. Our contribution this year is Memorial Day word search puzzles. Kids can play them at your cook out and it will help them understand the reason for the holiday.
