Sad to leave San Francisco we caught the bus to Santa Cruz. The bus ride was probably the best part, as we drove through the mountains and forests, which gave great views. We arrived in the early evening. Our hostel was really nice, lots of little cottages, though no free breakfast this time! We decided to explore our surroundings. We were just a 5 minute walk to the beach and Santa Cruz's huge boardwalk. The mist had come in though, which gave it an odd atmosphere, so we didn't stay out for long. Santa Cruz is part of a huge marine conservation area, so there were loads of sea lions swimming about, some came right up to shore so we were given a closer look which was really cool.
The next day was warm and sunny so we headed to the beach. The beach was nice, though the boardwalk was a wee bit tacky with lots of fairground rides and touristy shops. We hardly saw any tourists, it kind of felt like California's version of Blackpool! It was nice to relax on the beach, but I'm not sure I'd go back-there wasn't too much to see.
That night we didn't get too much sleep as we had been joined in the room by a lady called Randy. This woman looked in her 60's, but was wearing skin tight jeans and a leather jacket (all of which she slept in) and had crazy peroxide blonde hair. She talked to herself the whole night, which was a little strange, and none of us were too sad to leave in the morning!
We caught the train to Santa Barbara. It was an 8 hour journey but it went along the coast so we were given beautiful views of big cliffs, deserted beaches and huge mountains. It was really cool.
Next stop: Santa Barbara!
