Helen has been with her parents in Colorado for the past few days and doesn't arrive until tomorrow night. We've decided not to do any of the major things until she gets here, so today we headed to the beach. The weather here has been gorgeous, a nice change from rainy Maine! There's not a cloud in the sky but it's not too hot, with a nice breeze blowing.
We spent the morning relaxing on the beach, still finding it odd that we aren't surrounded by screaming children! After a quick lunch we signed up for some surfing lessons!
Our teacher, Chris, was a typical surfer dude-he spoke just like the turtles in Finding Nemo! After practicing (on dry land) standing up on the board from a lying position and perfecting our surfing stance we felt ready to hit the waves!
Turns out surfing is pretty hard! I didn't manage to even lie on the board for the first 20 minutes, I was too busy battling against the waves trying to get in a good spot! After managing to clamber on the board, the waves would come hard and fast, standing up was impossible, and usually I was flung off in some ungraceful manner. Some highlights included me hitting myself in the face with my surf board after a wave pummeled into me, Emma managed to surf into me, Caroline lost her bikini to the Pacific and I'm pretty sure I swallowed half the ocean. Still, a fun experience and I'm glad I tried!
The hostel is putting on a free dinner tonight, so that's where we're headed next :)
