Flag of New Zealand  , North Island,
Monday, April 18, 2011

A fixed point on our itinerary from the beginning on was New Zealand (NZ).
we've heard many good things from friends and blogs about the country and so we planned to spend 2 months there.

On the flight from South America one day got completely "swallowed" by the date line which we crossed westwards... the 20th of April kind of never happened for us ;)

As we are far behind with blog-writing, we decided to put the whole nz-time in two entries, devided by north- and south-island...

The kiwis (new zealanders) we encountered were all very laid-back and helpful, giving us tips on where to go and what to do.
NZ is a very diverse country, offering huge forrests, deserts, lovely beaches, mountains, glaciers and much more.
We also pleasently noticed, that - as far as we as tourists could observe - the Maori (native people of nz) are well integrated in the society, having own tv- and radio-channels as well as bilingual signs (maori and english) throughout the country. Opposed to the image of the australian aborigines - who are said to be lazy alcoholics (which is of course not true), we never heard any downtalk concerning the maoris.

After the first few days in Auckland we picked up our rental-car to start our road-trip around the two big islands. Hitting the beginning of winter, we experienced quite some rain, especially in the north. The weather and the recommendation of the locals to spend more time on the south-island made us drive quite quickly southwards.
As nz is also quite well visited by travellers, the offers and possible activities are countless. You will see pictures of some of the activities we chose like Zorbing, caving in waitomo, visiting kauri-museum, thermal wonderland, sculpture gardens, sheepworld,...

In New Zealands capital Wellington, after visiting the parliament and observatory we then took the interislander-vehicle-ferry to the south-island.
