We left Boyne Falls MI on a cold October 25 morning driving south to Sarnia Ontario and spending the night just east of Buffalo. Friday we drove through New York state on I-90 and part of Massachusetts and arrived at my sister's house at 3 pm. It was a great trip with very little traffic. We were trying to outrun hurricane Sandy and spend two days with my sister Kris, her hubby Mark and my brother Dave who we haven't seen in two years and then drive to Wash D.C. and spend two days there visiting with Denny's brother George who we haven't seen in 4 years. But we couldn't outrun Sandy. She was expected to make landfall Monday in New York City or New Jersey and if we had left on Sunday as planned for D.C., we would have been driving into the eye. An adventure for sure but not a safe one. As it turned out, there was a reason. Saturday Denny, Kris & I went shopping for water and batteries just in case and while loading up the car, Denny doubled over in extreme pain. He thought it might be an appendicitis attack, but didn't know. He was sweating profusely and nauseous so my sister drove straight to the ER at the local hospital and they began the tests. After a CAT scan, an ultrasound, blood tests and urine tests, they found a kidney stone. It had moved from when he first arrived and the pain had subsided. The doctor told him it was located near the bladder and he would pass it and gave him a strainer to use for the next 3 days and to drink lots of liquids. Not a problem! He passed it the following morning at 5 a.m. What a relief! There was a reason we weren't supposed to leave yet. Denny has been through some harrowing surgeries in the last 5 years and we were so very relieved this was just a kidney stone. He's had two other attacks but they were over 20 years ago. So now we are hunkered down in Hudson waiting for Sandy to make her entrance. She was due to hit us on Sunday and arrived on schedule. We had high winds and rain, but we never lost power. We called Denny's brother George and sadly we all felt it would be better to postpone our visit to D.C. It was great to see Kris, Mark & Dave and we even got to help put up their Christmas tree the day after Halloween.
Friday, Nov. 2 we left Hudson and drove through New York city (Queens) and witnessed the crowds standing in line for gas and then in New Jersey we were on the turnpike and saw all the vehicles lined up onto the turnpike for the service stations. We were lucky we filled our tank up in Hudson the day before we left. We passed many convoys of electric trucks from all across the country coming to help those without power.
Saturday we left early and arrived at 4 pm at Walterboro at a Microtel. The temp was a balmy 78. Hooray!  Here's a few pics.
