Flag of Bahamas  , Marsh Harbour,
Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Wednesday, March 9 - Up early and updated the blog in the laundry room with coffee from our thermos. Jack on Odyssey took off this morning with a friend headed for Guana Cay. Julie & Chad told us about an 81 year old woman they met who sails her own Gemini catamaran moored in the harbor. She lost her husband and took the insurance money and bought her catamaran. Apparently she has always wanted to sail but her husband didn't. She named it  "Caesar's Ghost". Caesar was her dog that also passed away. Around 11 a.m. we went by dingy into town again with Chad & Julie. We carried our walkie talkies and met for lunch. Lots of hiking and picture taking today. Den & I discovered an area on the north side of the Cay on the Sea of Abaco and walked for close to a mile along a dirt path with beautiful colorful villas and cottages (worth over a million a piece) on each side. Each one had a plaque with the name of the cottage. There was "The Pineapple", "The Fig Tree", "Lavendar Cottage", Sunrise Tellin." Lunch was a great sandwich and ice cream cone at the Sugar Shack. Back to the dingy and we rode around the entrance to the harbor and out around Eagle Rock. The marina where we are staying filled up fast. We have a sailboat on one side from Valdez, Alaska and one on the other side from Jackson, Michigan. Every 6 hours is low tide and it becomes a real challenge getting on and off the boat when the dock is 3 feet higher. We've had to become quite flexible. At anchor or a mooring ball you don't have to worry about it. But because your dock lines are tied to a stationery dock, we have to allow for slack to accommodate the 3 foot rise and fall of the water. Back at the Harborage in Stuart we were tied to a floating dock. The pilings were not submerged into the river bed, but floated instead. So the tides were not a problem.
