When the meal had concluded Ben and I decided to take a walk towards Campo de Fiori, a center of nightlife. After a drink in an Irish tavern, of which there are strangely hundreds in Rome, we set off back to the hotel. We hailed a taxi and were about to get in when we noticed that two women had tried to catch the same cab. We offered to split the cab as we were going in the same general direction; they agreed. As we introduced ourselves they discussed how they just got jobs as the marketing representatives for a new local club called Goa.
They informed us that if we could get ten people or more interested they could give us a great deal for the evening. Being tired with Irish pubs and herds of American students we inquired further. It would cost 15 Euros for a coach bus ride, cover charge, coat check, and our first drink free. Seeing as most drinks in Rome cost 8 Euros alone we felt this was a good investment. I told the women that we would try and get a group together and wished them a good night.
Back at the hotel it was an uphill struggle to get a solid commitment out of anyone. Althoug after an hour we had a good group of fifteen ready to go. We made the call and arranged the coach bus to pick us up at the hotel.
When our group of 15 showed up in the lobby to await the bus I felt their loyalty deserved some sort of reward so I picked up two bottles of inexpensive Prosseco, an Italian sparkling wine, for the bus.
We soon boarded and were off to Goa with champagne corks popping.
The ride lasted about 20 minutes and we stopped in front of a long alley. At the end was a large white building with modern, abstractly shaped windows. Inside was a black, circular bar accented with glowing red orbs hung from the ceiling. This was certainly an authentic Euro club. Professional dancers would stand on raised platforms wearing Carnival type masks.
We danced to the mix of techno and American music through the night, boarded the buses, and rode back to our hotel pleased about our first brush with true European nightlife.
