Once I was back in France, I immediately felt quite sick. I spent the first day in Lille but missed out on really seeing the city because I was utterly exhausted. Not only that, but the day was so foggy that you couldn't really see the tops of the buildings, and it was also quite cold. I think I'm losing my Canadian cold resistance. We met up with some of Guillaume's friends from uni, but I was so tired I couldn't even try to talk and I actually contemplated just leaving and taking the Eurostar back in the direction of Loughborough. There was nothing I wanted to do more than sleep.
Fortunately, we went back to one of his friends' apartments, and they let me sleep for a bit while they went out shopping for supper ingredients. Then a whole bunch of people came over, and they made a potato, cheese and bacon dish that used the stinkiest cheese ever but was absolutly delicious in the end. I also enjoyed cheating and talking to a few people in English because it was all I could manage. I was so, so glad to get back to Guillaume's house to sleep, which I did until about 2 pm the next day.
After I'd recovered a bit, wew took a trip to La Coupole, which is a great concrete dome that was built to launch German rockets at England although it was never used in the end. They have an extensive museum there, and we only got through maybe half of it, although that was enough really because I was mostly reading and listening in French although once or twice I tried German just for kicks. It's amazing how much things can change for the better in the span of only about 50 years. From bitter enemies in the two wars, their troubles are now completely behind them and I'm told they sometimes represent the other in negotiations now too!
After a few more days of relaxing, and one cheese-fondue session, we headed back across the Channel to England, this time with Guillaume's cousin as well, who spoke about as much English as I spoke French. I drove in his car so that I could talk to customs people, etc., and we got back to Loughborough with no problems except the fact that my ears were by now very stuffy.
