Sami and I arrived in Barcelona at around 3pm, and were happy to finally get off that plane! Long flight, but exciting adventure ahead. The Vasanta Hostel Boutique has been wonderful. A gorgeous boutique hotel (only a month old) has a very modern and chic feel. More importantly, our host Jaíme has been gracious in welcoming us to our new home for the next 3 days, as well as walking us through the map of Barcelona and what to explore each day we are here.
Today, Sami and I spent the day getting comfortable and settled for our first night in Europe.
We set out from our hotel to explore the area and ended up in the area of La Gracía for most of the evening. We found a Gin & Tapas Lounge called, Úbeda. This was a great first stop, as we met a young man named Jimmy, a local, who helped structure the rest of our time here in Barcelona. He made us our first authentic meal of marinated sardines and olive bread topped with tomatoes. After Úbeda, Sami and I meandered further into La Graćia (structured mostly of narrow cobble stone streets and many restaurants, bars and shops). Their, we found another great spot which sat right upon a square (and upon arrival, it was desolate). Sami said to me, "something is going to happen in this square tonight, I can feel it!". Well...low and behold, as we were sitting in front of a window-table, enjoying stuffed pimentos, croquettes, and other Spanish treats, a display broke out in the middle of the square.
Suddenly appeared tribes in brightly colored costumes barring horns as a headdress. They began displaying rival sets of hand-held firework displays. Along with this, they each had their own larger-than-life dragon (very reminiscent of the Chinese New Year Parade), which they also attached and set off fireworks.
We had a great time watching this surprising show, making new Barcelona friends, and enjoying the authentic cuisine of this region.
We could not have asked for a better start to our trip. (Please see the photos we have included.)
