After an enjoyable couple of days by the coast we set off for Ometepe. Waiting at the ferry dock for over an hour we reluctuntly got on the dodgiest, over loaded smallest looking ferry we had ever seen. The next hour was fun, spent in the blazing midday sun, no water or sunscreen and choking on the fumes of the boat blowing straight at us.
We landed (yeah dan?) at Moyogalpa and after a good hour of chilling in the first cafe we came too, we found our very cheap hotel and went for a wander round the town. We all wanted to watch the sunset over the lake so we grabbed a beer and headed down to the dock. this resulted in a near death experience of the worst kind..merrily dangling our legs over the side of the dock a local rushed to our rescue and mimed the action of an alligator/crocodile grabbing our feet and dragging us in. I (sarah) was not impressed....
The next day we fulfilled the dreams of the boys and hired a very cool white old toyota 4x4. We spent the day driving it round the islands, which turned out to be much bigger than we thought and had much worse roads than we thought. We got it stuck in the mud..standard.. visited coffee plantations and checked out suitable places Phil and I could camp and spend the rest of our week at.
After a fond farewell to Dan and Lou we set up camp at a sweet little campsite by the side of the lake, in Merida, on the smaller island. The campsite was run by a lovely family who looked after us incredibly. They must have took pity on us as every night we attempted to camp and everynight the biggest storm would hit right above us, so they kindly let us stay in a little dorm hut for the same price.
It was very peaceful there with not alot to do other than chill. One night we fished with the lads of the family, Sarah catching seven to Phils two. That night they cooked us fish (caught by them not us, ours were too small) which we enjoyed in their home with them and some lush juice made from fruit of the Pithaya cuctus plant. During our final evening we played cards with the two little boys, giving them our spare pack of uno cards and the rules much to their delight.
We left Merida after about four days and headed back to Moyogalpa for a couple of nights and some civilisation and bbq steak and chicken enjoyed immensly by Phil.
