Flag of Cook Islands  ,
Wednesday, February 1, 2006

The title of this entry is prompted by the fact that I managed to do practically nothing in the Cooks... I didn't do the usual island hopping thing (too expensive) but spent my days reading/walking/being on the beach/swimming. This was THE place to meet people, unfortunately mostly British.. so I guess you could do that at home! Actually I shouldn't say unfortunately, as I met loads of brilliant people (and a few psychopaths!!)

I went out a lot and moved hostels twice to get a change of scenery. The best thing about the Cooks is that most people stay for at least a week, so those I met in the hostels would come out for at least two nights on the town, meaning we were able to get to know each other well enough to have a very good night. Looking forward to seeing some of you in London soon anyway!!

I wasn't overly impressed with the Cooks themselves; it's SO touristy and very small. People aren't as friendly as in Fiji so I was in for a bit of a shock. There isn't the range of activities or adventure that is available elsewhere and sadly the 'Island village life' here is entirely fake. Despite what I harped on about in the Bali post, this is a prime example of totally sterile tourism. Anyone choosing between the two would miss out if they picked the Cook Islands as a typical South Pacific paradise. The biggest let down for me was the state of the coral and sealife... I've never seen anything so bad. I didn't manage to take one presentable picture in 11 days, so I think Plymouth has more going for it!! Harsh, but for me entirely true.

What I did enjoy was the mountain of books I got through and speaking to many other travellers, which ultimately kept me very happy and from getting too bored. I feel so calm from having relaxed for the last 5 weeks I feel all aggression has completely dissolved. I seem to have a very high threshold to irritation... Does that mean I've built some patience?!!
