Today we took another bus ride about an hour south of Madrid to Toledo. Toledo is known as the "City of Three Faiths" because Christians, Jews, and Muslims all lived there together in peace during the Middle Ages. During that time, several artists collaborated to build the city's Cathedral. Toledo is also the home of many paintings by El Greco. Toledo is the marzipan capital of the world. We got samples every time we entered a store in the Plaza de Zocodover. On the way back to Madrid, the other bus got a flat tire so we stopped at a gas station for 45 minutes while the drivers changed the tire. The very narrow, cobblestone streets and blinding sun in Toledo made this another really hot trip. Everyone keeps talking about Spain's unusually hot and dry summer this year. I certainly believe them since temperatures rarely go below 80 degrees, even at nighttime. Thank goodness weather forecasts say that it's supposed to cool down soon. I can't wait for sweaters and jeans!
