Americans don't refer to the day after Christmas as Boxing Day, it's just the day after Christmas. But there are sales, which we decided to avoid. We started our day with a free ferry ride on the Staten Island Ferry, a 30 minute ferry ride which passes the Statue of Liberty. I grabbed some really good shots of the statue, and also of the Manhattan skyline.
Once at Staten Island, we disembarked and then lined up to board again, as there is little to do over there. We caught the subway from South Ferry uptown, jumped off at 42nd street and headed over to Grand Central Station. This building is quite spectacular; architecturally lovely, but very busy. There were many people heading in and out on trains, but lots like us just there for the experience and photos.
After a spot of lunch, we wandered downtown past the New York library, the Empire State Building, the beautiful Chrysler Building, towards the incredible Flatiron building. An architectural masterpiece, this building, completed in 1902 was once one of the tallest building in the city. Gary and I were looking forward to seeing the Chrysler and Flatiron buildings, and they were so much more spectacular in real life.
We grabbed a subway home and were serenaded by some xmas singers on the train. Dinner was xmas leftovers, and an early night for all tonight. Weather tomorrow is rain, so we plan to see the Museum of Natural History.
