Our first day in Vienna was kind of a wasted day.  First, we made the drive from Budapest.  We stopped for lunch at KunstHausWien, an art museum.  We were supposed to have time to walk around the museum but we never got the chance.  Lunch was really good, though.  We had weinerschnitzel and sachertorte...two of the most Austrian things there are to eat.

After that, we had the choice to go to either the Schunnbrun Zoo or the Palace.  I chose the zoo.  We got on the metro, went all the way to the zoo, then decided we didn't have enough time to go in.  We then went all the way back to the hotel as we still had to grab dinner and put on fancy clothes for the opera that evening.

The opera should have improved the day except that it was a really really bad opera.  We saw Tiefland, a German opera hardly ever performs outside of Germany or Austria.  I can see why.  It's supposed to be a comedy..I think...but it was never actually funny.  The music isn't anything too extraordinary.  And while I couldn't understand it, the whole thing just seemed to wordy.  Other operas I've seen keep the dialogue simple in order to fit into music better.  This one had whole ridiculous speeches.

As if that wasn't enough, this production tried to modernize the opera.  I'm all for trying to modernize plays and such, but sometimes it just doesn't work.  This is one such case.  The plot involves lonely shepherds and a woman who gets sold off to a man.  These things just don't update to present day.

So the shepherds were chilling in the mountains while the town was really a factory where people dressed in business casual clothing and hairnets.  It definitely wasn't a "pretty" opera.  The lead girl also couldn't seem to be able to stand up straight and was generally an awful actress.

I actually thought about leaving halfway through.  Oh well, everyone had gotten excited thinking we would be seeing a nice traditional opera.  I think most of the other people just slept through it.
