It took us much longer to get to Bruges than expected. Bruges is a small town with about 100,000 people living there.  We had, unintentionally, arrived on the busiest day of the year with an expected 600,000 person turn out.  It was chaotic as we tried to get into the city and park.  The center of the city is mostly pedestrian so you have to park on the edge and walk in.

Bruges is popular for being charming and medieval.  It's basically touristy and kind of fake.  Even the medieval streets were apparently mostly rebuilt to look quaint and charming.  Therefore, it's kind of like going to Disneyworld for the day except better. Because Belgium has Belgium beer, chocolate, waffles and they, of course, invented the french fry.

Colin and I started out with french fries.  I got mayonaise on them and he got some meaty strange substance on his.  And we got some mulled wine.  NO, I did not have any Belgian beer and I didn't buy any.  I meant to but our 5 hours in Belgium turned into 3.5 and I ran out of time and money.

The Christmas markets were stupid.  There weren't that many and there was next to nothing to buy.  But the streets were filled with chocolate shops and lace shops.  I bought some handmade truffles for myself.  I've only had one but they are delicious! I had an amaretto one and I bought some champagne ones as well.

I also had a chocolate waffle later that day.  But basically I just wandered around.  My friend climbed the Belfort which had around 400 claustrophobic and crowded stairs which I decided not to climb as I was still kind of sick and coughing.

So other interesting things, Belgians have the cutest dogs I've ever seen.  Everyone brings their dogs out with them.  There were lots of greyhounds and weiner dogs.  There's also a ton of bikes everywhere like Copenhagen.

You can walk across downtown bruges in about 20 minutes.  If you get lost, you'll just eventually end up outside of the city.  I think I got just enough time to wander around although the streets were so full of people that it was hard to walk.  Despite not having quite enough time I feel like I did the whole city.  It was nice to go but I don't think I'll be going back.  As for Belgium, it would be nice to go back.  The food is great and then there is the beer.  If I hadn't have been short on money and time I would have bought some.  There's so many different kinds of beer and lambics made from berries.  Their beer is also popular because of the high alcohol percentage it often has.  Some of the beers are up to 14% alcohol!

Anyways, we had to be back at the bus at 5:30 which, typically, many weren't.  We then missed our ferry.  Got to sit in the bus for an extra hour.  Then, arrived just in time in London to miss the last tube so I had another 40 minute walk home at 12am.
