The Oldest Rainforest in the World!

Taman Negara is not easy to get to! We first flew to Kuala Lumpur. The next morning we got on a bus, rode two hours, then another bus for a half hour, and finally sailed up a river on a longboat for another 3 hours! (You don't have to take the boat, but it was a neat experience to sail through a rainforest We saw a monkey walking along the shore!)

Taman Negara is a huge, much larger than can be explored in a few days. Some people go for week long backpacking adventures, sleeping on the trail and eating sardines. Overnight treks are pretty much the only way to see really exotic creatures like wild elephants. That seemed a little too challenging for us, especially with the threat of leeches and mosquitoes!

We did a cool "canopy" walk way up in the tall trees. We also hiked out to a couple of nearby animal spotting stations ("hides") - we managed to see some wild jungle deer in the daytime, woo! On a guided nighttime hike we saw a mouse deer, a tree snake, walking sticks and a giant BIRD eating tarantula, whoa! Also, apparently centipedes are quite poisonous here, ay yay yay!

All the restaurants in TN are floating in the river. We had an amazing banana honey pancake and some enormous fruit shakes, yum!

Though the jungle is quite exciting, it is still rather hot and muggy and we were happy to move on. Luckily we only saw ONE leech!

We are having SUCH problems getting pictures to publish... hopefully, round 2 will work!!
