Here the main draw was a volcanic park & the next day, I joined a tour to Nevado Del Ruiz. We drove up & up, into the National Park where another guide explained the geology & fauna, / up we went to a refuge at 4,900m where we started to climb towards the glacier. I had an annoying cough & really struggled to catch my breath as the altitude took hold & we edged up to 5,100m, the highest I have ever been. Our driver Oscar walked with me all the way, as I coughed
& spluttered, having to rest every minute or so... I certainly wasn't the only one to have problems, but it was sooooo frustrating!! Eventually we reached the glacier at 5,100m, lying between 2 craters. The many clouds temporarily cleared to give awesome views
of the rich black old lava & the ice-white glacier. In 1985 this volcano erupted & melted its icy top, sending a torrent of mud down the valley like a river, where it swept away 23,000 inhabitants of the town of Amero to their deaths.
I stayed in a sweet travellers' hostel in Manizales called Mountain House, near the university in the chilled open-air cafe
section of the town. I was tempted by the relaxed atmosphere to stay a little longer than planned, & managed to squeeze some new clothes into my increasingly bulging rucksack!
