It's an odd moment leaving the country and not knowing exactly what is ahead. I knew that whatever was ahead would require sunscreen-that much was certain. The rest seemed fairly ambiguious. I knew I was on a flight to Rome, stopping in Munich. I knew that I would be "in Italy" until the 31st of July and I knew I had to report for work on the 1st of August in Athens, Greece. Before I left, I kept looking at the map, looking at the smattering of islands, thinking that in a few weeks, Monastraki and the Plaka and Idra would mean memories but for now, I stumbled through the books on Greece. The Greek alphabet alone seemed a little daunting. The closest point of reference I had for the Greek Alphabet wasn't the most academic and was related to university life. But very soon, I would find myself in a new land with a new language. Should be entertaining to say the least.

The flight was a little on the long side-I had two high school girls crammed behind me on the Lufthansa flight who insisted on playing war on the way over-which is a fine occupation but not when it involves slamming the tray table repeatedly at 5 in the morning. But luckily, I sleep well on planes and I slept a good portion of the way to Munich.
