The next day was our last attempt at visiting the one remaining
'must-do' on the island - the Halealaka crater.  So the idea is that
you get up at about 2:30am, drive up 10,000ft to the top of haleakala
and ensure you're there one hour before sunrise (to make sure that you
can park and stake out a spot for the sunrise in the place that
translates as "house of the sun"). Oh, did I mention that the
temperature at the summit in winter before dawn in sub-zero? Sounds
like a blast? That's what we thought. As far as I'm concerned, being at
the top of Machu Picchu for dawn earned us one "get out of
being-at-the-summit-for-sunrise free" card. So instead, we drove up
leisurely at about 8am in brilliant sunshine on the clearest day we've
seen. As we drove up the steepest 37 mile road in the world we passed
groups of cyclists who'd chosen (apparently of their own free will) to
coast down.
