Zdrova! Hello from Bitola in FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).
I'm back dating this and am cheating! I am back in Siatista, Greece. We left Bitola this morning but as I haven't updated anything since I landed, I thought I'd cheat a bit!!!
Ok so where to start??? I finally got to do some shopping!!!! Yippee!!! But didn't end up with much!!!
We went to Ohrid which is 1 1/2 hours from Bitola. It is the closest beach or body of water you will get in Macedonia. It is a massive lake that many tourists use because there is no beach in any vaccinity. The sun was shining beautifully and the weather was great.
Our next adventure was a Macedonian wedding with my friend, Anita's, family. What a big wedding that was! From the church in their village to the reception set in the mountains, it was loud and huge!!! The church was over 120 years old. It was very small and funnily enough, it had no seats! There were the seats on the side of the church as a Greek church has (if any of you have seen this you kow what I am talking about). As you entered the church, you had to bend down so as not to hit your head going in!! I don't know why the entrances is so low but surely people weren't that short years ago??? If anyone knows the answer, please let me know.
The reception was at a hotel which was nestled inthe mountains. It was beautiful and the food was great!! There was lots of dancing, singing, more dancing and a clarinet player which is huge in Greece and Macedonia. The music was very loud and I don't think they have any type of noise restrictions at all!!! Many times we went outside to sit as the level of the musicbecame unbearable but we still had fun.
The following day we slept in which was much needed!!! We headed off for a quick bite of banana fritters!!! What an unhealthy breakfast!!! After that we walked for what seemed forever to find an ancient site called Heraclea Lyncestis. From what I understood from the tour guide who we foloowed while we were walking, it is an ancient archaelogical site that was found and is slowly being dug up. By the way it is going, that could take forever!!! There was an ampitheatre there also and we pretended to be performers on stage!! There was a stage set up as they were using it for performances.
That night we headed off to another town, which I can't remember the name, for their beer fest!!! It was massive and too many people there!!! They had many tentys set up with food and of course beer being sold everywhere. They also had many famous singers from Serbia, Macedonai and surrounding places singing there so you could just imagine everyone was coming out to see this because it's free!!! You gotta love a freebie!!!
This brings us to today, our last day in Bitola before we cross the border again and head into Greece. This morning we had a quick breakfast then went walking to the bazaar. It's a bit like Vic Market but not if that makes any sense!!! Unfortunatley there wasn't anything I could buy!! No souvenirs were in sight which was a bit disappointing!
Back to the house to get our luggage and drive back to the border where my brother in law's cousin Harris was waiting for us in the bus!! I don't know if I have mentioned the car my sister's family got was not a car but a mini bus!!! Very big for the small streets of the villages!!!
I hope your first week back has gone well and you're settling back in.
I hate to say this as I fear having an anxiety attack but believe it or not this time next week we'll be talking all about our holidays and I may even have pictures to share with you all. That's my priority when I get back, its on the top of my list!
If anyone has anything to bring in and share please do because it's not all about me. I want to know what you have all been doing.
Take care
xx
