The Pousada Guarana almost deserves it's own entry. Whilst Rio is lucky to have places like Paraty on it's doorstep, Paraty is lucky to have a place like Guarana. David and Jimena are the best hosts we have had anywhere bar none. They just get it and have built a place that they would themselves like to stay in. Assisted by Cassia, the cooks and the cats and dogs this place is great (personal favourite Jackie the 2 month old puppy!)

From this base we explored Paraty for the next 3 days.

After our evening introduction to the historic centre the next day we met a fun couple from New York. As we got talking it was strange to find out

1. They got married in June (like us)
2. Jen was a pescitarian (like Sanj)
3. Jason was a veggie (like me )

Anyway we were glad to hear that they had also chosen to book on the boat tour so we all went off to the pier together. By this time the weather had turned and far from the 100 degrees or so it had been for either past few days, it was threatening to rain.
Despite the weather the boat tour was fun and we visited 4 different spots. I went for a swim at the first but then spend most of the day drying off as I hadn't brought a change of clothes!

Some of the islands around Paraty are so small and secluded and some only have room for one house but apparently people live in them!

The other "feature" of the boat was the singer that accompanied us. He sang some Spanish guitar ballads all the way with the speakers cranked up high. He got louder when we passed other boats in what seemed a competition to see who could be heard! Didn't help the conversation on the boat.

When we did have time to talk Jason and Jen told us some good veggie places in California which we will visit later in the trip! We also talked about the upcoming elections which made us realise we would be in LA when they take place.

For lunch we were given these massive cheese pasty things and chips (calm down Roly) The portions were HUGE! (I said calm down)

There was also this one guy with a big belly and skimpy speedos who insisted on diving in wherever we went and no matter how cold it got. He is my hero.

The boat trip was fun although we could see there was a storm brewing so were glad not to get caught up in it as we were dropped off in Paraty.

A special mention to the dinner we had which was quite possibly the best pasta I have ever had! It was at Cafe de......... The owner was this great big old man who spoke in a very croaky voice and drank Grants whiskey which endeared him to Sanj!

I forgot to mention we surprised Sanj with a cake on her birthday video now attached!
