Left Kerala and now in Tamil Nadu. The people here have darker skin and slightly different facial features. It's poorer here and you see also less developed. As the bus enters Pollachi, I decide to start a scale of what I call the Triple P (pee, poo, & petrol). And from what I can smell in Pollachi, it's definitely up there, maybe an 8 (nothing beats S. Bathery though, that has a 9.5 Triple P).

Over the next few days I visit some nature reserves, seeing wild elephants and sloth bears. At the hotel there is a young boy of about 10 working, stopping by on a regular basis into my room. It was a surprise the first night, as I was getting out of the shower when I heard the door open. He came in unannounced, catching a glimpse of me naked! Unfazed, the sweet intrusive boy continued to try to come into my room throughout my stay, even when dropping off my newspaper at 6 A.M. Upon seeing that the door was in fact locked, he proceeded to ring the doorbell. While the kid is a cutie patootie, I definitely learned a cultural difference here. Make sure to always have your door locked as Indians tend to come in without knocking.

On the evening prior to leaving, I was leaving an internet cafe down a side street the dark while conversing with Tams. Going down the steps, explaining something in detail I jump the last few steps when I suddenly found myself being dragged out of something with searing pain. I am lying on the dirty concrete slab covering the sewers slowly recognizing what happened. As it was dark due to the poor lighting casting shadows everywhere, I mistakenly jumped right smack into an open square, thinking it was a shadow. Half disappearing into the drainage sewer, my legs rammed right into the concrete slab. I look down and see it already bleeding and swelling up. I hobble back to my room, past the group of gawking men to shower and try to salvage what little pride I had left. Those wounds, (along with the humongous bruise on my thigh) would last with me for weeks on end.
