It took three plane rides along with a three hour car ride (roughly 2 days) to get us from Seattle to the Simbambili Game Lodge in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Exhausted, we slept for about 14 hours the first night. We also slept through much of the heavy rain we seemed to have brought with us from Seattle. Luckily the rain only lasted a day.

On our first full day at the lodge we were ready at 5:45AM for the morning safari. There are two each day, one in the early morning and another in the early evening. Because of the wet weather we were only out for about 2.5 hours. We still managed to see giraffes, impalas, kudus, hippos, wildebeest, and a large variety of birds. When we got back to the lodge, one of the exotic looking birds, a red-billed horn bill, tried breaking into our room a few times. The ranger, Richard, later explained that the bird probably saw it's reflection in our window and was attacking it.

The evening safari was even more exciting as our tracker, Celebrate, worked with Richard to find large water buffalos and a male lion in the dark. Richard drove our open air jeep into some deep brush to follow the lion, who seemed at ease with our presence.
