Florence used to be the capital of Italy back when it was one of the mightiest cities in the world. Florence is of course the home of the renaissance and its most famous monument is the Statue of David. Supposedly the perfect man.

Our first stop was the hills of Florence where we got to get a full view of this beautiful city. The main reason we were here was to take a souvenir group photo, at a price of course. There are many replicas of the Statue of David throughout the city.

The next stop was a leather demonstration which showed how to make a leather box and how to determine what is real leather. Basically the only way to tell is if it has a genuine leather stamp on it. Smelling it and burning it doesn't work. Then we got free time around the city.

Those of us that could stand the wait in the rain got to see the statue of David. It is situated in the Academia Gallery. It was worth the hour wait to see the real thing. It stands at 5m tall and is depicted from Michealangelo's boyfriend, so David is gay. We weren't allowed to take pictures but some people snuck a photo or 2. Some people were just stupid and took a picture with the flash on. They were escorted from the building.
Another impressive sight was the duomo, which means church. It was about as big as the cathedral in Cologne but not quite as intricate.

Then we headed back to the hotel to rest up before dinner. We needed our rest because the next dinner supplied unlimited free red wine for the night. We all got dressed up in our best clothes to get ready for a 4 course that was one of the best meals on tour. There were Italians singers before dinner. First course was an antipasto, followed by a pasta dish, followed by beef and salad and last was a delicious cake. In between each course we had a professional opera singer and we had to wave our napkins to applaud her.

After dinner many of went to a club called space electronic discotheque. It was quite corny and they had podiums and cages to dance in. They also had a karaoke area for those who were interested. Unfortunately I did not get to see a whole lot of the disco since one my contiki friends helped herself to a little bit too much wine at dinner. I did get a good view of the outside of the womens toilet in the disco while waiting for Anh. With the help of another guy from contiki we managed to get her home without much harm done. All in all it was a fun night though.

During the entire trip I had not been sick (pretty everyone else had been) or had a hangover. It just happened that both hit me on the morning after the dinner. It was not a great morning with a headache and an upset stomach. With a lot of effort and a few panadol I made it to the bus. Before we were going to Nice we had one quick stop: Pisa. Thats right the leaning tower of Pisa. After that I slept all the way to Nice.
