Phenom Bencha Mountain View

Penhom Bencha Mountain View Resort was our next destination on Krabi, just 30ms away from Railay by Longtail boat.

The resort is situated deep within the moutainous jungle and during the high season, acts as a base for hiking trips. During our stay here we were the only guests and the down pour that greeted us on our arrival, and lasted about 4 hours, made any plans of a jungle trek out of the question.

In the evening, we sat down with one of the workers at the resort for a couple of hours, listening to his views on Thailand and having him fill us in on all things Thai from food to boxing.

We took to exploring our jungle bungalow, finding a giant black and yellow spider the size of my face and a bat using our porch to shelter from the rain. Naomi named the spider Ursula and the bat Freddy, in a vain attempt to make them less frightening.

Food at the resort was fantastic and the restaurant looked out onto a large fresh water lake, filled by a series of mini waterfalls. More alarmingly, the restaurant also displayed pictures of giant pythons, 5m long, and deadly black cobras found in the resort, which bordered a national park. While the owner assured us only one worker had been bitten, he also assured us "that snakes are everywhere here", traumatising Naomi into leaving the light on all night and double bolting the doors and windows.

However, we both felt a nervous fascination and were desperate to see one, so went for a morning walk around the grounds and up to a local resorvoir to see if we could spot anything slithering in the trees. Sadly it was not to be, and we returned relieved, but also a little put out.

Aside from these deadly creepy crawlies, the resort had beautiful well-maintained tropical gardens with large fruit trees, palms, and exotic bright flowering plants. This made it home to a blinding array of butterflies and dragon flies which Naomi tried her best to capture on camera.

Photos will be uploaded when we find somewhere with FREE internet.
