Greyhound didn't mention to me that the stop for Wytheville was not actually in Wytheville at all, but in the carpark of a motorway McDonalds, 8 miles up the Interstate. So when I arrived after a 17-hour bus trip, not having slept for lack of legroom and 4am transfers, I found I had to haul my pack three hours along a motorway, under the searing southern sun, with bigrigs and bikers ripping past and waving cheerfully at the modern-day wannabe hobo. I was pissed, in the American sense of the word, so when I arrived in Wytheville I went and got pissed in the British sense of the word.
It was a pleasant town, with old-style diners and Civil War graves. I stayed in the Travel Lite Motel, rented a car and hit the hills. The Blue Ridge Mountains are very pretty. As part of the Appalachians they are among the oldest mountains in America, and are no longer as spectacular as they have once been (their heyday was around 200 million years ago - I guess I just arrived a bit too late).
Two days hiking about and eating hotdogs with the natives was enough for me. Time to keep going...
