After a very long and painful flight from Fiji to LA, we then had to wait around and hop on another plane to arrive in San Francisco. Here we were hungry so had a brief wander round and ended up in 'Loris Diner', a proper 50's style American diner! I had an oreo and malt mikshake that was awesome!! Then trudged back to our hostel and after doing the math, realised we'd had a 34 hour day. Ouch!

Whilst in San Fran we explored the city going to Nordstroms (a large shopping centre with the worlds only spiral escalator) and had a ride on the old trams! They're pretty cool as still very traditional and have the turntables at the ends where they have to get off and manually push the tram round. We also explored Fishermans Wharf and the different piers, sampling a massive pretzle and the like. Really busy and bustling it was a great atmosphere.

Our trip to Alcatraz was pretty cool. We got the boat across and had an audio tour which was very interesting, learning about the 'battle of Alcatraz' which was a huge riot between the prisoners and the guards, and also the famous 'escape' (and we went into the cell which he broke out of, still with the hole behind the sink) and all the different well-known prisoners that were held captured there.

The only downside was walking about at night as we were staying in the downtown area which was pretty dodgy! Lots of people hanging about on street corners etc so we were rightly advised to not venture out in the evening. But all the good stuff was best explored in the day anyway.
