Koalas Backpackers

Arrived at Airlie Beach, a small pretty town with a cool swimming lagoon. Stayed in Koalas Backpackers and shared our room with a friendly little gecko but had to be careful when we went outside not to get hit by falling coconuts. Apparently one of the biggest causes of deaths and they certainly made a bang when they fell to the ground. It rained A LOT when we first got here as well (it was the rainy season to be fair) and its proper torrential tropical rain so while running across the road for cover with my jacket over my head I naturally slipped in a huge
puddle flat on my bum. So ladylike. Then had an extremely wet, muddy bottom.

But the main attraction here is the Whitsunday Islands, a group of about 74 islands that you would expect to appear on an idyllic poster of paradise (you know the stuff- crystal clear water, golden smooth sand, lush tropical vegetation etc) So we got a daytrip on a sailing boat, feeling the spray of the sea and the wind in our hair, and stopped on Hayman Island at Blue Pearl Bay to go snorkelling. A super beautiful spot we climbed into stinger suits and went off exploring.

It was wonderful, saw thousands of tropical colourful fish swimming around. There was a long thin metallic blue type one with a funny snout which was cool and some really tiny ones, a rainbow colour one that looked unreal (like a 5 year olds colouring in job) and basically lotsa
different fish really. Then peering into the distance there was a big dark shadow (oo eee) and it came gliding towards us and was the biggest fish ever!! Called a maori wrasse apparently but goes by the name of 'elvis' he's just over a metre long and very dark with a few stripes and
weird revolving eyes. Pretty ugly but likes having his chin tickled. Also saw a giant clam about a metre long and looked like it had big snappy teeth. Wont go looking in there for a pearl.

Then someone in a dingy threw some food in the water by our heads and the reaction was incredible! Suddenly there was just a blur of fish inches from my face whizzing around. Awesome! Surrounded by swarms of them. Ooo and spotted nemo too!

Then we sailed back and it poured with rain again but still nice and hot so sat on the front on the boat in attractive yellow fishermen anoraks.
