My most interesting day thus far was when I rented a motorbike for 250 pesos and turned left
. It's hard to get lost on an island, especially if you just keep turning left...or right. As luck would have it I had chose a road that led straight to one of the Philippines National pastimes, cockfighting. This was just a small time affair, the bigger events take place in arenas here. However this didn't diminish the enthusiasm of the crowd at all. I strained to watch a few of the battles, but for the most part I just sat in the shade with a new found friend and made bets through an intermediary. He would ask which chicken I wanted to bet on.....I generally took the one on the left! My first match was a draw! Both chickens died....not in vain though, they were soon on the grill and they were tasty! (sorry to my vegetarian friends, both of them) As luck would have it the fella who had been showing me the ropes asked me to stop by his daughter's house later for a visit. I thought it was going to be a thatch hut....it ended up being the largest House on the whole of the island! There was barbecued seafood caught that morning and no shortage of beverages. Strangely enough I already knew two of the other guests, having met them in the couple of days on the island. In no time at all I knew a couple dozen peoples names and all the local 'hot spots'. This place has yet to really be discovered in any great respect. There's a heap of Swiss people and another American, Hymie. He sailed in five years ago and hasn't had any notion to leave. It's that kind of place.
I finally tore myself away from the place this morning. I had to take a ride on the back of a motorbike to catch a small boat which then took us to a slightly larger boat. From there I landed in Negros traveled a couple of cramped hours on a bus to catch another boat then road in a bicycle's sidecar to my current hotel. Somehow 'Island hopping' always sounds more glamorous than it really is.......more of the same tomorrow. Catch you down the road...
Well I thought it was about time to check in and let those interested know what I've been up to. I arrived in Cebu Philippines a week or so ago......It's hard to keep track here, it really is. As I had been here previously I felt quite at home and enjoyed a few fun filled days in the big city. However I was eager to light out for parts previously unseen.....I had already been to the south end of this island so I thought I'd see what the north had to offer. That's how I got to Bantayan. Now I had already been on a good run of luck having won 7000 pesos on the pool table my third night in town. Then I won 200 at the cock fights and just last night 1200 at a friendly game of Texas hold 'em! So far things are going my way. I can only hope this will continue as I will eventually end up in Manila...where they just had another Bus Bombing and then fly to Egypt....riots in the streets!
