Sam: On Monday 12 July, we packed up camp in Rifle and began our journey to Utah. We decided to break up the trip and spend a night in a motel along the way for a much deserved hot shower, warm bed and some internet access. We chose the Super 8 in Salina, Utah.

After too much roadside fast food, Lee's body decided to rebel and our one night stopover turned into two. In hindsight, this was actually a good thing. We both really enjoyed the downtime and caught up on some much needed rest, TV, books and internet. (Lee: 12 hours of pain: not a good thing.)

On our final night in Salina, Lee's stomach was feeling much better so we decided to check out the highly-recommended Mom's Cafe. Now, Salina is a very small town with not much in it, so it was either Mom's or more fast food (which neither of us were very interested in). So, we entered Mom's with a little trepidation... it looked like a traditional American diner out of an old movie. I ordered the steak and vegies and Lee had the spaghetti with home-made sauce. Our waitress happily took our orders and told us we had to have a scone with our meals. Not one to object to any food recommendations, we both agreed and looked at each other a little confused. Steak and scone was a combination I'd never had before. Well, my steak was the best steak I have had since leaving home (just like it was cooked on the BBQ at home) and Lee's pasta was just what the doctor ordered.

Then there was the scones! Certainly not what we expected... nothing like a scone from Australia. Instead, this thing was like a doughnut that looked like a potato scallop. It came with Honey Butter which we were told had to be spread on top of the scone before consumption. Again, we both did as we were told and poured some trans-fatty honey butter onto our fried delight. I have to emphasise that this is NOT a good choice for anyone watching their cholesterol, but as a treat, it was absolutely delicious. Apparently these "scones" are an institution, with people coming from miles away to try these from "Mom's" and now we both understand why.

After a truly awesome dinner - with great home cooking and a second night's sleep in a warm comfy bed, we both felt totally refreshed and ready to resume our US adventure.

Onwards to Maple Canyon! Wagons-ho!

Hi you two. I will never look at a scone in the same way again if it doesn't come deep fried and with lashings of honey butter. You sure know how to enjoy the local delights.

Glad you enjoyed the recommendation. Those are the type of scones that I grew up with. The first time I was a scone in a bakery I was disappointed as I anticipated the deep fried goodness.
