On boarding the ferry to Helsinki a friend gave me some useful advice "Tip: Don't get really drunk, oversleep and wake up the next day as the boat is already sailing back to Sweden...". Thank you Suzanne you words were noted, however, you failed to mention the need to take into account the hour time difference when setting the alarm so we were slightly confused when we woke to the broadcast notifying us that we would be docking in an hour. At least it wasn't saying we were heading back to Stockholm.

As we couldn't check into the hotel until 4pm we dumped our bags in a locker at the ferry terminal (no queues, one locker, all bags, 4 Euro - bargain) and headed into town. There was a market near the harbour where old boys sold their fish from boats and brightly coloured rows of fruit and veg glistened in the morning sun so we called in there for croissants and coffee before continuing up a treelined street of designer stores with a park running through the middle.

Having convinced Sam that it was in fact a long way to walk with backpacks from the ferry terminal we hailed a cab to the hotel, much better idea, and checked into our new abode (Omenahotels.com) for the next few nights. Nice central place with ample room but instead of checking in at reception you're texted a door code and room code earlier in the day making it feel a bit like a locker for humans.

Whilst in Helsinki we did a bit of shopping, caught up on emails and admin, skyped family, went to the cinema to see The Bling Ring which Sam really enjoyed (not!) and as the Festival of Helsinki was on we spent Saturday night popping into various terrace bars and listening to some surprisingly good cover bands.
