We eventually made it to Oslo after a 7 1/2 hour drive and a few detours on the way due road closures - most helpful when told some 20km into the journey. Thankfully the drive was as scenic as ever which made the time pass relatively quickly.

The campsite in Oslo sat on a hill overlooking the city and made for a beautiful view both during the day and at night.

With the car due to be returned we pitched the tent, emptied our belongings then drove into town for a bite to eat, wander and drink.

Having been in relatively small towns it was nice to be back in a thriving metropolis full of noise, life, shops and restaurants. The waterfront development oozed a sense of fun and relaxation with equal measures of home, work and leisure achieved by the mix of apartments and work space. The only drawback being it was built on the wrong side of the harbour and was therefore cast in shadow by 3pm. Still, it didn't stop us from indulging in lobster, prawns, crab, mussels and wine.

After spending a morning doing some much needed washing we caught a tram up to a park full of statues which, in my opinion, were more weird than wonderful (Vigeland Sculpture Park). At the centre of which stood a giant stone column made up of naked bodies climbing over one and other to reach the top. Personally I think it was more of a phallic symbol than that of man striving to reach the top but hey, art never was my forte.

One building I did admire was the beautiful marble Opera House built as if it was rising out of the sea. Very impressive.

So with bellies full of seafood, clothes smelling fresh and feet tired from walking we left Oslo feeling as if we had done it justice and despite the prices we both think it would be a great long weekend getaway with a bunch of friends.
