A week on Koh Jum was one of the most relaxing experiences ever, it's sooo laid back there friendly locals, great food, practically deserted beaches bliss! total contrast to Bangkok or even Krabi. Although there is tourism on the island it hasn't spolit it so it was perfect for us.
We rocked up at a place called Bo Daeng. It had a reputation for amazing food and basic bamboo huts. It was run by a lovely women called Deela who was always smiling (see photo). The island is very small it has one 'ring road' around it, which was a red mud track which we managed to cycle round in an afternoon. Locals are a friendly and happy lot who make a living from tourism, rubber plantations and fishing, When we asked Lynn (from Bo Daeng) if he was ok he said "yeah everyday ok!", thought this summed up the general mood there really well.
We spent the week in the sea, on the beach, walking around a bit and stuffing our faces (happily regaining all the weight we lost in Nepal!) and discovering cool wildlife (but avoiding biting things and cockroaches). We stumbled upon a rubber making factory which was pretty cool to see and Tim tricked me into a jungle thrash on the worlds cheapest mountain bikes (full suspension). Anyway you'll be pleased to know I stayed on (mostly) and I can go down hills at speed now without falling off (mostly)... bonus! We also managed to ride back in the pitch darkness as common sense wnt out the window and we didn't bring lights, couldn't see the road ahead of me and kept thinking "'just try to avoid monkeys, ditches, snakes and you'll be ok". Made us both laugh when one helpful local on a moped shouted "no lights... no good for you" as he passed and nearly knocked me off, useful advice we thought. Managed to get within 3 puddles of home when I slipped off and covered my white linen trousers (another lapse of common sense) in bright red mud, needless to say they now look like some horrific tye dyed affair! All good fun.
