Only one full day here before pushing on to the High Tatras, which we spent visiting Spis Castle.  You'd think we would have learned our lesson by now as far as Slovakian castles are concerned!  Alfie Roose had nothing on Sam after we slogged up the hill to it from the village of Spisske Podhradie where the bus stops in blazing sunshine only to find the gate firmly closed (which means she got a bit stroppy for those of you who aren't relatives).

Luckily we had the sense to walk round the castle and in so doing, found the main entrance open.  Unluckily we unwittingly walked the long way round but at least this meant we could appreciate the full scale of what is apparently one of Europe's largest castles.  Great views from the ramparts and surviving tower.  Unfortuntely the museum there was closed so the significance of the most of the ruins was lost on us plus we didn't get to see the section on torture instruments which seems to be the best bit according to Lonely Planet.  Even the souvenir shop, which to all intents and purposes seemed open, was apparently closed (actually we were eventually left in no doubt of this fact by a particularly aggressive female Slovakian shop assistant).  So to be honest, the best bit was seeing some rare little marmot type creatures (spermophiles according to the information boards, which valued them at 500 Euros???) in the grass within the ramparts.
