A plane ride from El Calafate to Buenous Aires was a real treat after all those bus journeys - we even got a free sandwich - (ham & cheese).
After discussing our plans for our final week of travels we decided against a trip to the famous Iguazu falls due to finances, avoiding a further 40 hours on a bus and because we´d heard so many good things about Buenous Aires. The city didn´t disappoint. With just under a week here we were able to explore most of the very different suburbs such as...
- Plaza De Mayo - political centre with the Cathedral, Falklands war memorial, Casa Rosada where Evita (Madonna) gave her famous speech. Here we also found the Unicef Bears for Peace display where each country had decorated a bear in the name of peace.
- Microcentre - Florida street - shopping! and famous Cafe Tortoni where we saw a fantastic Tango show.
- San Telmo - where we lived, old neighborhood, lots of tango shows and Plaza Dorrengo with huge antiques market and Uruguayan food.
- La Boca - Buenous Aires ´little Italy´. slightly rough but very colourful. Home of Tango and Boca Juniors FC (Maradona).
- Recoleta - Posh and colonial. Recoleta cemetorary is where Evita (and many other rich folk) are buried in house sized tombs. Here we also found a dragon display in the arts centre.
- Palermo - even posher. Lots of gardens, parks and a huge Polo field - they love their Polo here.
It´s been really nice to stay in the same place for more than a few days too. The hostel is very nice too, and at least one of us enjoyed watching the England v France game here!
Staying put for a while has also given us chance to reminisce again on our travels and gather our thoughts on what we´ve learned from all of the different cultures we´ve been fortunate enough to mingle with.
We´ve also been getting excited about seeing the friendly faces of all our family and friends at home - thats you guys.
See you soon!
