It's a tiny, quiet island with about the same population as Ledbury, surrounded by beaches - and only 1 hour ferry ride from bustling Auckland.
The main town, Oneroa, has two main beaches - big O and little O. The four of us stayed for four nights in our own house (wow) in the jungle next to little O. We had two days to chill out, explore and socialise with Spuds friends and family before the big day
The wedding itself was on big O on a gorgeous Saturday morning at an alter of local flax poles followed by lunch for a select few (including us!) at a picturesque winery. Then followed a dip in the sea with the bride and groom before the evening do at the 'sand bar' involving the obligatory wedding Bon Jovi. A great time was had by all. The groom especially liked his album of photos and messages from home and the evening live web cam link up with friends from home - although a few sound problems and possibly too much alcohol hindered any coherant conversation!
We loved Waiheke so much that we decided to stay for a further 3 night on the island, this time at a backpackers on Onetangi. To enhance our island experience we hired a car, not just any car but a nissan sunny - get in! We spent our last 3 days on the island visiting beaches, winerys and WW2 defence posts and tunnels.
We said our goodbye to Spud and Kim over a gobsmackingly delicious tapas after having had a great time catching up, and headed back to Auckland on the ferry. Here sadly we had to say good bye to Olly and Jenny too but so that they didn't miss us too much we gave them lots of our heavy stuff to take home to remind them of us!
