We had a pretty chilled out day in nearby Matara and Dondra. Our driver Rana introduced us to a couple of chaps at the lighthouse in Dondra Head, which is the highest in Sri Lanka, who in exchange for some Arak (coconut whiskey) would take us to the top and let us switch the light on and off. This is definitely the sort of 'hidden Sri Lanka' we were after and we got to see a rare glimpse of the coast from 30 metres up and nearly fry our faces off standing next to the lights. Luckily they had been waiting a month already for the replacement bulbs so the lights were nowhere near full force.
We ate hoppers (dish shaped pancakes with chilli sauce) in the local greasy spoon. The locals were waiting for Rich to reach for the water as he tucked into the hottest item on the menu, devilled chicken, but didn't count on his asbestos mouth. His nose did bleed though, oddly! They were joking as we left with Rana, who was by now a bit of a blob from the same food, that he had done all the sweating on Rich's behalf.
