Where I stayed
Rawana Holiday Resort
We tucked into curd (buffalo set yoghurt) and treacle (from palm trees!), the local speciality, in a local shop as our hotel was a rip off before getting dropped at the bus stop on our way to the hill
country. The bus was our first taste of public transport on the trip so far and it was a surpisingly enjoyable, if sticky experience, being crammed like sardines into a bus hurtling along busy uneven roads with the doors open, almost falling out on occasion to the soundtrack of the Sri Lankan reggae/Hindi music fusion, pumping out of the pimped-out stereo. Sri Lankan people are very friendly/nosey and so are quickly offering advice and assistance with making the right connections so finding our way to Ella was simple. The views going up into the hills (or as Brits would call them mountains) were beautiful.
We arrived in Ella to torrential (and we mean torrential) monsoon rain but this didn't dampen the spirits as we looked upon the impressive view from our open sided restaurant at the guesthouse and consumed copious amounts of the best curry in Sri Lanka.
