Tom Tom (GPS) directed us to Rothenburg but when we got there it was a walled city with a small entrance through the archway of a tower, we thought surely we cant go through there, so we drove around the city and found the same entrance on the other side and thought what do we do.    We sat and watched and saw a couple of cars go through the entrance, we must be able to go in,  so we went back to the original entrance and drove through and wow what a magnificent medieval town, we felt as though we had stepped back in time.  We drove through the cobblestone streets and found our hotel which was originally built as a manor in 1536 then in 1704 it became a brewery and in 1984 it was converted into a hotel.   We went for a walk around the town it was late so a lot of the shops had shut, we had dinner in the old marketplatz and watched the doors of the town clock open on the ratstrinkstube ( the city councillors tavern) and recerate the "Meistertrunk" of 1631, when the town's mayor reportedly glugged nearly a gallon of Franconian wine on a bet with a general whose troops had just conquered the town during the Thirty Years' War. In winning the bet, the mayor saved Rothenburg from destruction.
Then the night watchman came over and took a group of people on a night tour of the town.
It is a really enchanting town and we wish we had stayed a little longer to explore the rest of the town and the beautiful little toy, gift and christmas shops.
