We spent the weekend in Harrisonburg, in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. I was here 35 years ago, cleaning motel rooms for a Summer job. We stayed with Allen and Jean, a couple who were very good to me back then. They were good to us again. They still live in the same house, and the motel hadn't changed much either. Everything else about the town was very different.
We had a great time, seeing things you normally don't see as a tourist, like the police and fire service offices, including the fire service museum. We also saw some Mennonite farms and the buggies they drive around in. WOnderful vegetable gardens too!
We had breakfast with a bunch of A and J's friends. I had to try grits - sort of savoury semolina pudding.
We also met up again with Theo, he and his partner, Linda, stayed with us in 2000 while cycling round NZ. He cycled over to see us - a short trip of only about 65 miles. He is still as fit as ever. Linda was home sick.
