Finally made it into Florida, almost at the East coast! All set to put our watches forward for the fifth time since arriving in the US, but apparently this part of Fl is on Central time, so clock altering will wait till tomorrow. Still managing to stay mostly on 2 lane highways, and as hardly anyone else does that it makes for very pleasant driving. Easy to stop where you want too. Just been out for dinner - they eat early here. Still can't get used to eating the salad by itself while waiting for the main course.
They're not big on wine either now we are away from California. The last supermarket I was in had 2 small shelves (not aisles) of wine and all but 2 of those were pink.
Heading down East coast of Fl tomorrow.
Wednesday = Crystal River, just N of Tampa. Made it to the coast (see pictures). Not exactly the East coast but still significant. For those of you feeling the cold in NZ we have provided a pool photo to make you feel warmer.
Tomorrow we intend to see the sights here then go to Tampa to see the Bodies exhibition. Will report on both when we get a chance.
Thurs June 8
Started with Homosassa Springs State Park. A bit like Rainbow Springs in Rotorua, very pretty with lots of trees and water and animals to see. This place was different in that it had mountain lions, snakes and other stuff that you don't see in Rotorua. Most interesting to us were the manatees/dugongs/sea cows. Huge creatures. Hard to photo though.
From there we went to the Science museum in Tampa to see the Bodies exhibition. This is touring the world, so you may have seen it. It consists of real dissected bodies, preserved in a special way so they are almost plasticised. Each is done to highlight a particular system eg digestion, or blood vessels. Really amazing and fascinating.
From there it was 4 hrs on the freeway (we're getting braver) to get to SE Florida. We are now in a nice motel unit which actually has a kitchen and living room as well as a bedroom. Great luxury. It is near the beach and has a nice pool. We are here for 2 nights. A nice break from travelling. No Internet access though, or even a phone, so you won't read this for a few days.
