Well the last entry said we were going to rotarua but not quite right we off to see waitomo caves before we get there. A quick morning tour of auckland is had before we head down to waitomo. We stop at a weird little campsite that looks more like a car park with a toilet block but the very helpful camp host talks to us for about an hour about the one experience that you must see when you come to new zealand ...Takami. now this man is very passionate, so passionate that an hour telling us how good it is is just not going to be enough for him, he is going to phone is his wife and step son in america and get them to tell us how good it is. thankfully yahoo talk is not working.
he also tells us what to do at the caves and where to stay in rotatrua and basically plans the next three days for us which is good for us.
next morning we decide thatt we must see the only experience in nz that you need to do and i quote " if there is one thing that you must do in new zealand its takami" all booked up we head to the caves. the abseiling and climbing tour is not available so we do the labyrinth (black water rafting). We tog up in wetsuit and helmets before grabbing our tyre innertubes and heading underground.
You float and walk and throw yourself backward over waterfalls all in freezing water underground. And then you turn the lights out and see all the marvelous glow worms above or as described by the guide (maggots wee glowing in the dark). 1 hour later and having a lovely time its back up the top for tomato soup and bread. lovely.
the cave area has more fun to offer so we carry on and take a look at some waterfalls and a bit of caving by ourselves. i think having underpowered torches and a extremly muddy cave didn't make becca the happiest person alive but we made it out to survive another day.
Off to smelly rotarua
