The guidebook says this town, La Fortuna, is horrible. You will be accosted by thousands of touts and you wonīt find anywhere to stay. Itīs supposed to be one of Costa Ricaīs top tourism destinations as it sits below an active volcano that has been known to spew out molten rock. We were on the quest to see lava flowing once again. When we finally arrived it was tipping down with rain (we have now entered the wet season) and there were no touts, not a sausage. We were almost disappointed with the lack of interest in us. This meant it took ages to find a bed as despite it being low season, the cheap places were full. Eventually found bunkbeds for $7 each with access to a kitchen and free internet, so not so bad. Whilst I was looking Paul made friends with the local crazy people in the park. Too many drugs.

As you all know, we are cheap. Being cheap we didnīt want to pay for a tour to see a volcano that may not īperformī so after much deliberation we decided to cycle. Probably not the best idea we have ever had as it was pretty much uphill in the boiling sun. After 90mins of this we gave up and sat in a roadside pub for like 3 hours making a beer and a sprite last as long as possible. But of course, we couldnīt fault the amazing view of the volcano, which disappointingly, was only vaguely steaming. However, we were the lucky ones as the locals say that only 1 in 3 people actually get to see it as itīs usually covered in cloud. So yey for us.
