Everyone rages about this place. It's an island formed by two volcanoes in the middle of enormous Lake Nicaragua.  I can't get my head around just how big that lake is. You take a 'ferry' - it's a loose term as the boat is practically sinking, the passengers sit next to the engine with a guy changing speeds after the capitan rings a bell - and for an hour and half you wipe the water out of your eyes as you glare at the incredible view.

We were very lucky to meet up with some other travellers on the way and ended up jumping in a minvan with them. As we had no idea as to where we wanted to go, this was the easiest option. Somone else did the negotiating and the decision making for us, it was bliss. On the other side of the island is a small group of buildings called Santa Domingo. We all ended up staying in the same budget hotel and had a cracking few days with some good food, beer and company at last. The only thing is, is that unless you want to hike up a volcano for 8 hours there's not a lot else to do. We trekked to a viewpoint in the boiling sun, it was very nice, and walked on the volcanic windswept beach, walked to a natural spring swimming pool, and drank a lot of limonadas. It's a place that grows on you. After a couple of days it dawns on you how peaceful the place is - there's very little traffic, monkeys hanging out outside your hotel, everyone's pretty laid back. And I'm certain it's the only place that allows a 17yr old girl to run a bar.
