We picked up the owners and began our trip to Croatia, via Trieste. The Croatian coastline is not as spectacular as we were led to believe. Maybe I've just become a bit spoilt with the places I've been to, but it just didn't seem worthy of the lavish praise everyone always heaped on it the moment you mentioned 'Croatia'. The old towns, however, made up for the mediocre coastline. I really enjoyed walking around the old walls, forts & cobblestones. You could still see evidence of the fighting during the years of Serb-Croat conflict on the walls and street corners with shell marks & craters.
On one island (forgotten the name) Jimmy & I rented scooters and took off for the other end of the island. As luck would have it, it started to rain just as we began our return trip. Being the independent, responsible types we are, we had made no provision for the fact it might rain so just sat miserably crawling along on our scooters as the rain pelted us in our shorts, T-shirts & slops. I was struggling to see cos I was alternating between having the sunnies on, but they steamed up & having them off & getting raindrops stuck in my eyeballs! To make matters worse, I was running out of fuel and with no station on the horizon, I just accepted my fate. The only thing that made me feel better was that I knew Jimmy was there feeling just as crappy!!!
