Where I stayed
A few hours outside of New Orleans, we found ourselves in Mobile, Alabama. It's bigger than we expected, with a few skyscrapers and a nice downtown stretch of shops and restaurants. But we weren't successful in finding a nice spot to stay (we're in the ubiquitous Holiday Inn) and the food hasn't been amazing, so we're planning to move on to Florida today, with a stop in St. Augustine on the east coast. We've already decided to end our trip next Saturday, to help my parents move into their new home, so it looks like we're on the last week of our trip. Don't worry, there's another trip to come, with forays down to West Palm and up to Providence, Boston and Bath, PA (perhaps even Rochester?)--we're just going to hose down the car and store the canoe in the new Palacio de los Howitt in Bluffton first.
Oh yeah, Mobile. So the highlight of our stay here was yesterday afternoon, when we decided to go for a swim in the hotel pool. Within about 5 minutes, we were engulfed in a giant tropical rain storm, with drops falling so hard that they actually hurt when they landed on you. So we just sat there in our bathing suits and enjoyed getting pelted by the rain. The wind was blowing sideways and everything. Awesome.
