What… Bulgaria?

Yes, Bulgaria for 3 weeks.  Why?  Well, that's a very good question, one we still have to think about ourselves.

We arrived in Bulgaria at 3 A.M which darkened our view of Bulgaria and its people.  Through time everything looks good after talking to the locals; a unique and educational experience.

We found out by taking the Free Sofia Walking Tour that Bulgaria has only been out of communism since the 1990’s.  So, a lot of the older people in the country miss the old communism ways because things were better for the whole general public’s well-being.

The best part of talking to a local in Bulgaria had to be their reaction when we told them we were from Canada.   "What?  Canada, why so far?"  After the fact they realized we were not Americans.

In the last few day of our stay in Bulgaria there was a terrorist attack only 30 km away from where we were staying.  The attack was at the airport aimed against a bus full of Israelis headed towards their hotel.  This was defiantly an eye opening experience for us because we have always missed such disaster in the countries we have gone to.

A few fun facts about Bulgaria…

-         During World War II Bulgaria saved 50,000 Jews from Hitler.

Bulgaria was a communist country up until the 1990’s

When Bulgarian’s waggle their heads Indian-style it means yes.

Bulgaria is the homeland of yogurt.

Bulgaria has 1325 years of history.
