Flag of China  , Yunnan Province,
Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Ruud and I packed our things and boarded the bus for our 2-hour bus ride to the small village of Quiaotou at the southern end of Tiger Leaping Gorge. The bus trip itself was nice as we headed further into the mountainous region of Yunnan Province.

Without question, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the most stunning natural sites I've seen on the planet. The Gorge itself is 16km long (as the crow flies) and measures 3900 meters from the waters below to the snowcapped mountaintops - yes, that's 3.9km of mountainside to enjoy (straight up) while hiking.

We stayed overnight in Quiaotou before taking off mid-morning for our first day in the Gorge. We decided to take the high path out to get the views (of course!) and to walk the low road back for a different perspective. Trekking distance is about 24km and we felt every km. Walking out included a two-day journey through some very steep country (my ass and calves are still a bit sore). Our efforts were rewarded with magnificent views of the river and gorge. We found some great guesthouses along the way and met good folks each night. Despite all the beer we were hiking MACHINES. At one point we took a 3-hour detour down to the water to see the Tiger Leaping Stone, from where the mythical tiger jumped the gorge that resulted in the name.

After two days on our feet we walked down to the (mostly) paved low road for the return 24km trip. I know this is a short entry, but take my word for it that this is a great place and will look back on this as a highlight of the whole trip. The photos don't do it justice - you just can't capture the scale or grandeur.
