Although Angkor Wat is known worldwide as the single temple in all the travel photos, it actually refers to a huge complex of structures built by the Khmer devaraja (god-kings). They tried to one-up each other from the 9th to 13th centuries, culminating in the world's largest religious building.

Angkor was "discovered" by the west when a French naturalist published an account of his visit in the 1860s. Look up the history...it's interesting.

Getting to and from the temples is big business here in Siem Reap. Tuk-tuk drivers hound you at every turn for the opportunity to drive you for the day. I had enough and stuck with my usual tactic of renting a bicycle and going it alone. It was hottt and stiiicky, but I enjoyed my day climbing through the various sites at my own pace. It was only about 40k on the bike that day.
